Prague is a city with more than a thousand years of history, which began by construction of the Prague Castle in the late 9th century. The biggest growth was experienced during the reign of Charles IV. Czech king was also the Roman emperor, and Prague was the capital city. The second time when Prague has become European centre of education and culture was during the reign of Emperor Rudolf II. The appearance of the city was greatly influenced the baroque period, yet other epochs left rare documents of architecture and art there too. Visitors from around the world are attracted by the unique symbiosis of well-preserved monuments of all periods and styles, from Romanesque rotundas, Gothic and baroque churches, Renaissance palaces and gardens to Art Nouveau, Cubist and purely modern buildings.
